GARETH KEMP
Gareth uses his paintings as a way for him to explore a personal geography and history shaped by memory and a strong sense of place. They draw upon themes such as human intervention in the landscape, art historical reference points and often contain polarised elements and a strong formal interest in composition. Starting point for the new work draws on research carried out during and since an A.C.E. funded research trip to Texas in 2018 . The Marfa Abstraction, Marfa Lights and Texan Landscape series all combine figurative and abstract elements in the landscape. They are painted from photographs taken in Marfa and Big Bend National Park (US). The luminous colours reference the Marfa Lights, an unexplained phenomena seen near Marfa in Texas. Shapes and motifs have emerged as part of the painting process, becoming both simplified and intensified and composition alters perspective, viewpoints and the placement of us as the viewer.
