GILLIAN HOLDING

(b. 1959 Chester, UK)

Gillian Holding is now based in Leeds. She originally qualified as a lawyer and practiced in London and Paris as a commercial and competition law specialist and partner in a leading corporate firm. She changed career to study a degree in fine art and graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2009 and won the Historical and Critical Studies Prize. She is a studio member and former trustee of East Street Arts in Leeds and has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally.

Her work is informed by the dissonance, paradoxes and absurdities of contemporary society unavoidably engaged in a fragile, uncertain, balancing act. The processes used to make her work reflects this uncertainty. Her paintings evolve from imagination and surreal association often originating in abstract forms. These are capable of multiple readings, just like the events of our contemporary world.
