HAZEL ROBERTS

(b. 1975, Warrington, UK)

Hazel Roberts is based in Manchester and specialises in creating multi-layered complex screen prints. Her work features both geometric and painterly forms, creating energy through gestural marks and a bold use of colour. Her work explores the personal, the political and always playful, in an attempt to bite back from all the bad advice given in art school.

Her inspiration lies firmly in working class history and those less celebrated figures such as Rosa Luxembourg, Alexandra Kollontai and the architect Margarete Schutte-Lihotzky. Hazel explores subject matters such as the unity, politicisation and mobilisation of people.

Accolades include winning the Leeds Left Bank Art prize in 2018, the Flourish Award for Excellence in Printmaking, and she was highly commended in the WWAS print making prize in Australia. Her work is held in permanent collections at The Working Class Movement library and the Mechanics Institute in Manchester.
