HETTIE INNISS
(b. 1999 London, UK)
Hettie Inniss is an artist whose practice focuses on the presentation of identity and the human existence. Existentialism, individuality, connectivity and our desire to be part of a homogenous group are subjects of interest. All are sparked by her desire to explore identity beyond arbitrary labels and her feelings of detachment as a person of colour within education and beyond.
She believes that taking artistic expression into the public domain is integral to abandoning Eurocentric exclusivity as art should be accessible. Through the medium of paint, she tackles notions of post-identity within her work and what identity could evolve to mean beyond preconceived notions. Through observational works of the public within the multicultural city centre of Leeds, and the spaces they occupy, she experiments with deconstructing the physical form of both subject and environment as a means of questioning philosophical ideas of what it means to be human.
