SEAN O’FARRELL

(b. 1966 Essex, UK)

Sean O’Farrell is fascinated by the experience of looking at art, the meeting between the art object, and the viewer and the environment of the encounter. His work investigates the relationship between the making and the experiencing of artwork. For the last two years, his work centres around the story and iconography of St Veronica.

Sean’s aim is to activate the viewer, making the experience of looking at painting more akin to that of looking at sculpture or architecture. The reflection of the gallery lighting on the glossy paint surface helps to achieve this. He says: “I want to make the viewer feel the need to move around the canvas, to invite the viewers’ attention whilst simultaneously refusing access to the image entirely.”

Sean studied Fine Art at Staffordshire University and an MA Fine Art at Arts University, Bournemouth. He now lives and works in Denbigh, Wales.
