HELEN DAVIES
(b.1981 Wigan, UK)
Helen Davies uses traditionally ‘feminine’ crafts to make very decorative pieces, using the intarsia knitting technique and using embellishments to illustrate a narrative. The artist has always been interested in the intersection between craft and fine art, especially the perception of needlecrafts as ‘women’s work’, and as being of low value. Helen also embraces the history of knitting as a subversive and political practice. Mental health and anger are strong themes in Helen’s work, particularly her own experiences. She addresses these themes in a humorous and vibrant way, exploring the relationships between social instability and inner turmoil.
