SAM VAN STRIEN
Sam van Strien, born in Delft, Netherlands, is a visual artist driven by the question of how – and where – we experience architecture. In his practice he makes several types of work, including rubbings, laser-cut engravings, and drawings. Through these approaches, he articulates the tactile and visual limits of buildings that are encountered during everyday urban life.
He earned his MFA in Painting & Drawing from Ohio State University (2017), and his BA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins (2014). He has exhibited throughout the US and Europe. In 2020 he was awarded the Netherland-America Foundation Cultural Grant for a residency at the NARS Foundation, New York. Recent residencies include PADA Studios (Lisbon, Portugal, 2019) and USF Arts Centre (Bergen, Norway, 2018). In 2018 he was shortlisted for the Sainsbury Scholarship at the British School at Rome. He currently lives and works in London, UK.
