NISA KHAN
Nisa Khan’s practice focuses on moments and experiences of her life which activated a sense of ‘in-betweenness’. The domestic and past unorthodox oral narratives between herself and her mother inspire Khans practice.
Khan’s work shifts between the implicit and explicit. At times symbolism subtly carries the ideas, other times the work is explicit especially when discussing ideas of ‘in-betweenness’. Khan amplifies the exotic and plays up to misconceptions by using repetition, cultural symbolism or the brown body to create a friction in the work which reactivate the in-between.
Khan unpicks multiculturalism; playing close attention to hidden elements within marginalised communities and sub-groups which hide in British, Pakistani and British-Pakistani working class and popular culture. She uses humour as a vehicle to expose the somewhat unpleasant, crude, familiar and unfamiliar elements of her culture, which connect to multiple social dynamics.
