HELEN DRYDEN
Helen creates paintings with atmospheric or emotional resonance that can veer into absurdity. She explores the tension between life as external ‘reality’ and her inner imagination and emotions. She is interested in perception, alternate realities and the exploration of humanity and nature’s strangeness. She combines abstract with figurative imagery to create paintings that can be strange, ambiguous and dreamlike. This series of paintings relate to her experience of being a parent and observing a small human exploring the world which she likens to being almost like a cosmonaut on a new planet, or a scientist conducting experiments. The figure is painted with an obscured face, as rather than a portrait of a particular child, this figure represents the joy of revelation and learning about the world.
