KEVIN DEVONPORT
Kevin works from his studio at Assembly House in Leeds (UK). It could be said that he has had a somewhat unorthodox entry into the art world as he learnt to paint whilst serving a prison sentence for drug offences. Art has offered Kevin a new lease of life by allowing him to reinvent himself and turn away from his criminal past. In the short time since becoming an artist, he has won a bronze award for the painting category in the national Koestler Awards in London and a semi-finalist in the King House 2020 exhibition, and has been featured in a number of publications. Despite not having any formal artistic qualifications he has a First Class Honours BSc in Sociology that has Influenced a number of his works.
This series of paintings illustrate aspects of Kevin’s own life. The series uses material artefacts and Tarot cards. The trainers represent 'the self' and the movement through life whilst the material objects convey expressions of a particular identity. Justice is a complex concept within the series, as one person's perception of justice is another’s injustice. The death card represents the ending of a particular chapter in life, hence the ending of his criminal identity. The sun in the tarot is one of the most optimistic cards and often portrays rebirth or renewal; in this instance it represents the rebirth of 'the self' as the identity of the 'artist' is adopted.
