GAVIN MCINTOSH
(b. 1973 Colchester, UK)
Gavin works in an intuitive, improvisational way, in dialogue with what’s emerging in the painting. The artist’s process involves acts that can be either impulsive or considered. Gavin focuses on how to manage colour relations, how to resolve edges and corners in ways that avoid clichés, and how to create openness without dissolving to nothing. They experiment and engage with these concerns on a practical, phenomenological level, experiencing how colour affects us physically and emotionally; how marks look clumsy or elegant, energised, or at rest; and how all these elements can combine to make a painting that holds our attention, and keeps us looking.
